Choose Your Type Of Swimming Pool:
What Is Pool Acid Washing?
This is a process of removing the algae, stains, and other types of debris from the walls of Pebble Tec and plaster pools. The Acid Wash is simply a mixture of water and muriatic acid. The muriatic acid is what removes the stains and leaves a clean layer of plaster. Acid washing is a very intense cleaning solution and it should only be used to remove really hard stains from plaster or Pebble Tec pools.
How Often Should I Acid Wash My Pool?
You plaster pool will need to be acid washed every 5 years while the Pebble Tec pool will need to be acid washed every 3 to 5 years. Acid washing should not be done regularly, as it can shorten the lifespan of the pool as well as plaster by removing too many layers. This should only be done when the pool tile or plaster has really bad staining.
Acid Washing Plaster Pools
Acid washing isn’t best for pool cleaning. You also should not acid wash the plaster pool if the plaster is old, thin, or worn out. Acid washing a plaster pool needs to be done every 5 years when the pool plaster is in really good shape or when the stains are just surface stains. If you have deep stains on your pool walls from the elements or rebar, then acid washing will not remove the stain. The stain could be layers deep, which prevents them from being cleaned with acid. During your initial consultation, we will tell you if acid washing would be best for removing your pool stains or if you need another type of stain removal.
Acid Washing Pebble Tec Pools
A Pebble Tec pool needs to be acid washed every 3 to 5 years, or as needed in order to remove pool stains. Acid washing works best on Pebble Tec pools simply because the surface is so much stronger than plaster and it can be acid washed more often. However, if you are wanting to remove calcium water lines, acid washing will not work. You will need glass bead or salt blasting to remove calcium.
Do-It-Yourself Acid Washing?
Yes. It is possible to acid wash a pool yourself. Although, it is recommended that you have a licensed pool company do it for you. Muriatic acid is quite toxic and if it is improperly handled, it can be very dangerous. Also, you can risk damaging your plaster if you leave the acid on too long. Do you know just how long you need to leave the acid on for?
Our Acid Washing Process:
- We drain the pool. You aren’t able to acid wash with water in the pool.
- Once drained, we apply muriatic acid and water mix on the pool walls section by section.
- We let the mixture soak for a certain amount of time, then scrub the walls to remove the debris and stains from each section.
- Once the stains are removed, we rinse the pool with water to remove the acid.
- Once rinsed, we continue to acid wash the remaining sections until the pool is cleaned thoroughly.
- We will neutralize the remaining mix with soda ash and then remove it from the pool with a pump.
- Lastly, we thoroughly rinse the pool and refill it.
Things To Remember
- Hire a licensed pool company to acid wash for you.
- Never leave the acid on the walls too long.
- Never acid wash too much.
