Glass Bead Blasting

Glass beat blasting uses an ultra fine stream of perfect round beats of glass. These beads of glass are around the size of the tip of a needle. They can clean oil, grit and calcium of the tiles and grout of the tiles. This type of blasting is used mostly on Pebble Tec swimming pools. The glass beads can easily be cleaned up after the blasting is complete, both in the pool and on the deck. It also doesn’t affect the chemical balances in the water like muriatic acid does.

How Often Should I Acid Wash My Pool?

You should acid wash your plaster pool every 5 years. You should acid wash your Pebble Tec pool every 3-5 years. Acid washing should never be performed regularly on plaster pools as it can shorten the lifespan of your plaster by removing too many layers. This should only be done when your pool plaster or pool tile has really bad stains.

Acid Washing Plaster Pools

Acid washing isn’t the best option for pool cleaning. Furthermore, you shouldn’t acid wash your plaster pool if the plaster is worn out, old, or thin. Acid washing on plaster pools should only be performed every 5 years when your pool plaster is in great shape or when the stains are only surface stains. If you have deep stain on your pool walls from rebar or other elements, acid washing them will not remove the stains. The stains on your pool walls could be layers deep, preventing them from being cleaned with acid. During your consultation, we will let you know if we think acid washing is the best recommendation for cleaning your pool stains or if other stain removal solutions are needed.

Acid Washing Pebble-Tec Pools

Pebble Tec pools should be acid washed every 3-5 years or as needed to remove dirty pool stains. Acid washing actually works the best on Pebble Tec pools because the surface is stronger than plaster and can be acid washed regularly. Although, if you are looking to remove the calcium water lines from your pool tile, acid washing won’t do that for you. You need salt blasting or glass bead blasting to get rid of calcium deposits.

Our Acid Washing Process

1. Pool draining is needed to acid wash the pool properly. You can’t acid wash with water still in the pool.
2. Once the water is drained from the pool, we then apply the muriatic acid and water mix directly on the stained pool walls (section by section)
3. We let the acid/water mix soak for a specific amount of time and then scrub the walls to remove the stains and debris from each section
4. After the stains have been removed, we then rinse the pool walls with water to remove the acid
5. After rinsing, we continue to acid wash the remaining sections until your plaster or Pebble Tec is cleaned thoroughly
6. We neutralize the remaining acid/water mix with soda ash and remove it from the pool with a pump
7. The final step is rinsing thoroughly and re-filling the pool water

Do-It-Yourself Acid Washing?

Yes, you can acid wash your pool walls yourself! Although, every expert in the industry recommends that you have a licensed pool company perform the acid washing for you. Muriatic acid is very toxic and can be dangerous if handled improperly. Also, you risk damaging your pool plaster if your leave the acid on too long. Do you know how long you should leave the acid on your pool walls for?

Things To Remember

Never acid wash too much
Hire a licensed pool company to do it for you
Never leave the acid on your pool walls for too long
