What Size Sand Filter For Above Ground Pool

The right size of sand filter needed for your pool is very much dependent on the pool shape and size. Let’s take a look at how you should choose and clean your pool filter below.

What Is The Correct Size Pool Filter For My Pool?

When choosing a pool filter for your above ground pool, it’s suggested to pick one that is at least one square foot for a 10,000-gallon pool capacity. For example, a 16″ sand filtered system has a 1.55″ square foot filtered area, which makes it perfect for a 15,000-gallon pool.

What Size Pump Do I Need For My Above Ground Pool?

Pumps for round above ground pools:

  • A one horsepower pump is needed for a pool that is up to 24 feet around.
  • A 1.5 horsepower pump is suggested for a pool larger than 24 feet.

Pumps for oval above ground pools:

  • A one horsepower pump is needed when the pool is up to 15 x 30 feet.
  • A 1.5 horsepower pump is needed for a pool larger than 15 x 30 feet.

How To Clean A Sand Filter

1. Preparing To Backwash

  • Check the pressure gauges.
  • Turn off the pump and circuit breaker.
  • Change the setting on your pool filter valve next.
  • Position your waste hose accordingly.

2. Backwash The Filter

  • Run your pump for at least two minutes.
  • Keep an eye on the sight glass.
  • Now turn the pump off.

3. Final Rinse

  • Switch the pump to the “rinse” setting.
  • Return back to the “filter” setting.
  • Check your gauges one final time.
